195 District Park Pavilion

ARO’s resilient design of the 195 District Park Pavilion creates a new public amenity and year-round destination in the heart of Providence, RI. After 45 years of dividing the Providence River from the rest of the city, the relocation of the I-195 highway paved the way for a new riverfront park. Through architecture and food, the Pavilion deepens the public’s connection to the River, bolsters local businesses, and strengthens community.

The new 3,500 SF building offers concessions from two local businesses, as well as public bathrooms and support space for park staff. The main dining area features operable storefront doors that allow for passive ventilation and indoor-outdoor dining service as weather permits.

A canopy shades outdoor dining and park benches, ensuring visitors are comfortable, especially during peak summer recreation season. A sloped green roof integrates the building with the park landscape and limits stormwater run-off while screening rooftop mechanical systems.
